How to repair cracked drywall in bathroom?
The drywall in my bathroom around the shower has cracked probably due to too much moisture. It has been painted with latex paint. Any suggestions on how to repair this? I really don’t want to have to tear it out or replace it, but would like to be able to maybe sand or fill in the crack. Thanks for your help
Anything you do short of replacing the damaged board will be temporary. You need to remove to stud lines and install a new section of green board. Tape and float the joints and repaint.
If the crack isn’t too deep, sand around the area first the fill with joint compound, let it dry, prime the paint. If it is a deep crack, you may have to apply a piece of drywall tape (paper or perforated) then finish off with the above steps.
You should check for moisture issues behind the sheetrock If it is cracking the sheetrock is probably destroyed in the first place and won’t hold up. But moisture can cause brown rot which will only get worse if you don’t take care of it. Brown rot is a serious problem if it goes too long without being addressed.
try chipping it out and then making it as flat as possible. Fill it with plaster. Then paint it with waterproof paint. I think the name of it is Mold Kill or something like that. It is bathroom or basement paint to keep the mold away. It is also used on basement walls. Then there are round plates that you can buy in various sizes. Find one that is wide enough to cover it over. It should look nice. If it happens again I think you will have to replace a section of the wall though. good luck.
fill it with bathtub caulk just make sure you get it good and smooth before you leave it to dry
